Gabriela Haley Stastny

I read Clay Travis's article and fabricated interview. I thought it a childish and inept stab at satire, but he misses the mark, instead highlighting how jealous he is of celebrity. (Did you read it? He goes on and on about Duncan's motorcade.) I'm also surprised that a person as bristly as he is could have moved here without considering the possibility that he'd be living and working with people of ethic backgrounds different from his own.

I also read some of Clay's postings on the incredibly stupid website he contributes to. His pieces mostly consist of overblown criticisms of sports figures and stultifyingly minute details of each game, but they also include racial snipes at high-profile minorities such as Morgan Freeman -- he's very upset at Freeman's popularity -- and fall-flat half-jokes about how Chinese people all look the same. Duhhhhhhh, you think that one's been done before?

Clay has no excuse. He has doggedly earned the community's contempt. Do I hope that he gets his ass kicked? Absolutely not. That posting is terrible because even the suggestion of violence erodes this community's moral stance on the matter and just gives racists something to complain about. Besides, kicking his ass is not only illegal, but it also won't fix a damn thing.

That doesn't mean that he should be spared this community's outrage and disgust, which should do the trick. This is a guy who has posted a picture of himself in, what, knee-highs and a green velvet outfit? In his other writings, he referred to himself as a neutered dog and said that he was officially and indisputably a loser. I'll bet that one good hard look in his direction will send him away whimpering with his tail between his legs.

I can imagine his next job interview. What made him leave paradise? He'll say he was misunderstood: an innocent editorial led to a huge misunderstanding between him and 50,000 people.

Let's be clear: there is no innocuous meaning for his writings. Someone who expresses the "jokes" that Clay comes up with is obviously suffering from an unfortunate combination of a huge need for attention and a sado-masochist streak. I'm glad that the law protects his right to air his repugnant views, but I wish he'd seek counseling for the other shit.

Preferably in Tennessee, where he came from, among his Aryan brethren.

Pot, kettle; kettle black.

How does responding to inept writing about how primitive Virgin Islanders are, with ... well, rather *primitive* threats of physical violence vindicate ANYone?

Take the high road, man. Otherwise you're just proving Mr. Travis' point.

MenyouandadognamedBoo

Shouldn't that read "mustachioed"?

Right. Not in the VI.

The Chronicler

O.K. I'll follow the advice of your comments and tone it down. I wouldn't want to see anything tragic happen to Mr. Travis.

By the way Menyouand..., the word is mustached. Mustachio and mustachioed refer to a "large mustache".

P.S. That one is published outside the V.I.

Here, on St. John, a number of people have been talking to the distributors of the Virgin Verve and informing them of its content. Many times the distributors don't even know that they're "official" distributors. The magazine gets dropped off in a pile on the floor and nothing is said to them.

All it takes is for the bar owner, shop, or whatever to actually take a LOOK and READ the thing to take the whole pile and toss it in the trash! If you want to improve our islands, do the same and talk to the owners/managers at distribution centers about it and let them know just how offensive it is.
